A Brief History of Audi
A Brief History
The first seeds of Audi began in 1899 when August Horch created the Horch and Co company. He left in 1909 to create a new business called Audi (the latin translation of his name). Post war depression in Germany forced the formation of the 'Auto Union' in 1932, a merger of Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, each represented by one of the four conjoined rings in the famous Audi logo.
Audi's racing and engineering prowess was immediately apparent. The amazing Auto Union 'Streamliner' racers producing 550bhp and 250mph back in the late 1930s! Audi went on to amazing racing success, in particular in the rallying and Le Mans arena's.
A move to their current home at Ingolstadt came in the late 50s, followed by their merging into the VW group in 1965. In fact, it wasn't until 1985 that the company itself would officially be known as Audi.
The road and rally world was turned upside down in 1980 with the appearance of the legendary Quattro. This was the first production sports car to feature 4WD, which ensured rally domination for years to come.
Audi's concept vehicles are legendary. The Avus of 1991 being formed entirely of Aluminium, a technique that soon passed on to Audi's luxury road cars. The original TT concept stunned the world and led to one of the most stylish coupes around. Now the new R8 concept is destined to be Audi's first supercar, with input from sister company Lamborghini.
A Brief History of Aston Martin
Over it's near 100 year history, Aston Martin has provided it's numerous owners with fluctuating fortunes (they first went bust way back in 1925) but the appeal of their powerful, hand built sports cars has always ensured that the company survived.
Founded in 1914 by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin (the 'Aston' name comes from a hill climb in which they competed) the company had racing aspirations from the off with class successes coming at Le Mans.
The classic road cars really began with the DB1 in 1948, followed in 1951 by the DB2 - the first to wear the 'Vantage' badge, being the most powerful derivative in the range. However, it was the DB5 that gave Aston Martin international fame after it featured in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger.
The famous Aston V8 first appeared in the DBS in 1969 and was subsequently fitted into the powerful V8 Vantage, the fastest car of it's day, with a near 20 year production span. The unit also saw life in Aston's first true supercar the 186mph Vantage Zagato of 1986.
In 1987, Aston moved to a higher level under new owners Ford. The gorgeous DB7 showed the way, followed by the Vanquish, DB9 and highly desirable V8 Vantage - all of them vying for their respective best in class. It is a tribute to the new marketability of Aston Martin that Ford has announced they are up for sale to boost Ford's own flagging fortunes.
